Tuberculosis,HIV, AIDS and Tuberculosis contribute significantly to the burden of disease faced by South Africans. This is particularly true for poor and vulnerable groups.

This is why the government has decided to put a huge effort into addressing HIV and AIDS and TB in an integrated manner. The most important strategy to combat these diseases is the HIV and AIDS Counselling and Testing (HCT) Campaign. The HCT campaign will scale up the integrated prevention strategy based on:

  • behaviour change
  • use of barrier methods
  • providing medical male circumcision
  • scaling up syndrome management of STI
  • early prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT).

The HCT Campaign will be used as a base for key TB control, treatment and management, including active case finding and contact tracing. This will be coupled with a strong focus on social mobilisation involving internal and external government partners.

In strengthening its oversight the department will proactively intervene in poor performing districts through enhanced supervision by national TB control and management.

The department will have to scale up support and follow-up for all patients on TB treatment and anti-retroviral treatment (ART) to reduce the number of patients falling off their treatment plans, which contributes to the development of drug resistance and poor patient outcomes.
