Human Papilloma Virus(HPV) programme

The first round of Human Papilloma Virus(HPV) programme conducted in public schools each year by the Department of Health in conjunction with Department of Education, is scheduled for 21 February to 28 March 2017.

The purpose of the programme launched officially in 2014 by the Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi ,is to reduce the incidence of cancer of the cervix through the introduction of the HPV vaccination to grade 4 school girls and give before they are exposed to HPV infection.

The HPV vaccination campaign is part of the Integrated School Health Programme driven the Department of Health and education. Others services offered through the programme include school health nurses health screening (eyes, ears, teeth) as well as age appropriate sex education

Over 3000 health professionals have trained in all provinces and all sub-districts to take in the implementation of the programme. Over the 2014- 2016 period HPV doses have administered 1 093 880 have been girls fully-immunised.
