Women's Day 2018

Women's Day 2018

The South African government declared 9 August a National Women’s Day to commemorate women rights such as rights to exercise reproductive rights, right to dignity, right to education and jobs as well as promotion of no - violence against women.

The Women’s Day was established to remember the 1956 march of approximately 20 000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to petition against the country's pass laws which excluded non - white South African citizens from voting, freedom of movement, freedom of speech and other rights given to whites.

This year’s commemorations all over the country will focus on promotion of no violence against women as women has in recent past been the victim of violence such as assaults, murders and abuse.

On 10 July 2018 South African men from different backgrounds marched to government offices to highlight and raise awareness against the scourge of violence against women and children.
