Health Technology Assessment (HTA) is a systematic, evidence-informed approach used to determine which health technologies, such as medicines, vaccines, devices, procedures, diagnostics and models of care, offer the greatest benefit for South Africa’s population. It requires a systematic, evidence-informed and multidisciplinary approach, incorporating multiple dimensions including safety, efficacy, equity, cost-effectiveness, budgetary impact, organisational, ethical and societal perspectives. HTA helps ensure that decisions about what to fund are fair, transparent and aligned with national health priorities, supporting the realisation of Universal Health Coverage.
Standardised, transparent methods help ensure that assessments are rigorous, consistent and suitable for use across the health system. This section provided the documents to guide how HTA is conducted in South Africa, from topic prioritisation through to assessment, appraisal and decision-making. It includes the national methods guidance, standards for evidence-informed decision-making, templates and submission requirements, and methodological principles for evaluating the clinical, economic, social and ethical implications of health technologies.
Publications support transparency and learning across the health system, enabling policymakers, clinicians, researchers, industry partners and the public to access the evidence that informs national decisions.
